The Cyprus Rock Agama is endemic to Cyprus<\/strong>, meaning it naturally occurs nowhere else on Earth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n It is also the largest native lizard on the island<\/strong>, with adults reaching more than 30 cm in total length<\/strong>, including their tail.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The individual featured in our video is still a juvenile. As it grows, its body will become broader, its colours more pronounced and its impressive spiny scales even more noticeable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Watching a young agama mature over the years is one of the small privileges of living close to nature.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Agamas spend much of the day basking in the sun.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Unlike mammals, reptiles depend on external heat to regulate their body temperature, so warming up each morning allows them to become active enough to hunt.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Their favourite places include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n From these elevated viewpoints they patiently watch their surroundings before launching lightning-fast attacks on unsuspecting prey.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The reproductive cycle of Kourkoutas is fascinating, with males performing elaborate displays to attract females in the spring, leading to the laying of 4-12 eggs in hidden, moist locations. Hatchlings are independent from birth, and these lizards can live up to 7 years in the wild. <\/p>\n\n\n\n Kourkoutas have adapted to their harsh environments with rough, spiky scales for protection and camouflage, and they remain motionless for extended periods to avoid detection. <\/p>\n\n\n\n Historically embedded in local folklore and seen as symbols of strength, these lizards now often reside near human settlements.
