What is the Lobed Argiope?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n
The Lobed Argiope (Argiope lobata<\/em>) belongs to the orb-weaver family (Araneidae), a group of spiders known for building large circular webs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Its most distinctive feature is the pale abdomen with deep lobes that give the spider an almost sculpted appearance. Combined with its long banded legs, it is one of the easiest Mediterranean spiders to recognise.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Although frequently confused with the Wasp Spider (Argiope bruennichi<\/em>), the two species are quite different. Unlike the bright yellow-and-black abdomen of the wasp spider, Argiope lobata<\/em> has a cream-coloured body with irregular dark markings and pronounced lateral lobes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Females are considerably larger than males, sometimes reaching body lengths of over 25 mm.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
