Wildlife often appears when we least expect it. At Mavronero, even routine tasks around the nursery can turn into valuable moments of observation, reminding us that our farm is part of a much larger ecosystem.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Recently, while checking our wooden nursery, we discovered a juvenile Cyprus agama (Stellagama stellio cypriaca<\/em>). Although it had wandered inside the structure, it remained there only briefly before finding its own way back outside.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Encounters like these highlight the rich biodiversity that regenerative farms can support when natural habitats are respected.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Cyprus agama<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The Cyprus agama (Stellagama stellio cypriaca<\/em>) is a subspecies of the starred agama native to Cyprus. It can be found in a variety of habitats including rocky landscapes, stone walls, woodland edges, agricultural areas and traditional villages.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Young agamas are especially agile and cautious, making them difficult to observe closely. Their excellent climbing abilities allow them to move effortlessly across rocks, tree trunks and wooden structures like the one where this individual was discovered.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As ectothermic reptiles, they depend on external temperatures to regulate their body heat, often alternating between sunny and shaded areas throughout the day.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\"\"\n\n\n\n

An important member of the ecosystem<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Although small, agamas play an important ecological role. Their diet consists primarily of insects and other small invertebrates, helping to naturally regulate insect populations within the landscape.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In turn, they also form part of the food web, serving as prey for larger birds and other predators. Their presence reflects the complexity and balance of healthy Mediterranean ecosystems.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Observing native reptiles on the farm is another indicator that diverse habitats can coexist alongside productive agriculture.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

At Mavronero, our goal is not simply to produce food but to cultivate landscapes where wildlife can continue to thrive.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

By maintaining diverse vegetation, avoiding unnecessary disturbance and applying regenerative farming practices, we create conditions that benefit both agriculture and biodiversity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Many wild species visit the farm only briefly, while others establish permanent territories. Every observation contributes to our understanding of how nature responds to careful land stewardship.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Finding this young agama inside the nursery was a simple but memorable reminder that biodiversity is present even in everyday places.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Rather than intervening, we allowed the animal to leave on its own, and after a short time it safely found its way back outside.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Moments like these reinforce the importance of sharing our farm with the many species that naturally inhabit the Cypriot countryside.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
