Each crop follows its own rhythm, shaped by the season, the local climate and the conditions in which it grows. By documenting these stages, we can follow the development of our crops and learn from each growing cycle.

This September, potatoes returned to the River Terrace, also known as the Big Farm area.

On 22 September, we planted 24 potato seed pieces in the growing area. September is an important month for potato planting in Cyprus, when the cooler part of the agricultural year begins to approach.

The planting marked the beginning of another growing cycle at Mavronero. After preparing the area and placing the potato pieces in the soil, the next step was to wait for the first signs of growth.

Just two weeks later, those first sprouts began to appear.

These early shoots are a small but encouraging milestone. Although much of a potato plant’s development takes place underground, the emergence of green growth provides the first visible indication that a new stage of the crop’s life has begun.

Why September is a potato-planting month in Cyprus

Potatoes are an important crop in Cyprus, where the relatively mild winters allow cultivation during periods when growing conditions are less suitable in many colder regions of Europe.

Unlike agricultural systems that rely mainly on spring planting, potato production in Cyprus includes both autumn–winter and spring growing cycles. The autumn planting season generally runs from late summer into autumn, although the exact timing depends on the region and local growing conditions.

According to Cyprus’s agricultural information services, potatoes can be planted from late August through November for winter cultivation, while spring crops are generally planted from January to February. The precise schedule varies according to weather and local conditions.

This seasonal flexibility makes potatoes an interesting crop to observe in a Mediterranean environment. Their development depends not only on the planting date but also on the conditions they encounter as they grow.

At Mavronero, our September planting allows us to follow the early stages of the autumn growing cycle and observe how the plants develop over the coming weeks.

Understanding potato seed pieces

Although they are commonly called seed potatoes, potatoes are not usually grown from botanical seeds. Instead, new plants are generally produced from small whole tubers or pieces of tubers that contain buds.

These buds are commonly known as potato eyes. They are small growing points on the surface of the tuber from which shoots can emerge.

When a potato seed piece is planted under suitable conditions, its buds begin to develop. The emerging shoots grow upwards, eventually producing stems and leaves above the soil. At the same time, roots develop and help the young plant absorb water and nutrients.

The original seed piece provides stored energy that supports the plant during its early development. As the shoots and leaves grow, the plant becomes increasingly able to produce its own energy through photosynthesis.

This is one reason why the first stages of potato growth are so important: they establish the foundation for the plant’s subsequent development.

At Mavronero, the appearance of the first sprouts approximately two weeks after planting marked the beginning of this visible growth phase.

From the first sprouts to a growing potato plant

Stage 1: Planting

The growing cycle began on 22 September, when we planted 24 potato seed pieces on the River Terrace.

At this stage, most of the activity takes place beneath the soil. The seed pieces contain the buds and stored reserves needed to initiate growth, but there is little visible evidence of what is happening underground.

<figure class="wp-block-gallery first days and weeks after planting, the buds begin to grow into shoots. The speed of this process depends on factors such as temperature, moisture, the condition of the seed pieces and the growing environment.

Under suitable conditions, the shoots gradually extend towards the soil surface.

Stage 3: The first green shoots

Approximately two weeks after planting, the first sprouts appeared at Mavronero.

This is the stage captured in our photographs: small green shoots emerging from the growing area, with their first leaves beginning to unfold.

Although the plants are still young, their appearance gives us an opportunity to begin following their development above ground.

Stage 4: Vegetative growth

As the plants continue to grow, they develop more stems and leaves. These leaves capture sunlight and support photosynthesis, allowing the plant to produce the energy it needs for further growth.

Later in the growing cycle, new potatoes begin to develop underground on specialised stems called stolons. The tubers gradually increase in size as the plant continues to grow.

The timing of these stages varies according to the potato variety and growing conditions. We will continue observing the crop to document its progress rather than assume a particular outcome at this early stage.

The role of soil and moisture in potato cultivation

Healthy soil and suitable moisture conditions are important throughout the potato-growing cycle.

Potato plants need access to water and nutrients as they establish their roots and develop their leaves. At the same time, the soil must provide enough drainage to avoid prolonged waterlogging, which can damage seed pieces and roots.

Soil structure also influences how roots develop and how newly forming tubers grow underground. Loose, well-drained soil generally provides a more favourable environment for tuber development than heavily compacted soil.

The surface of the River Terrace can also be seen covered with plant material in our photographs. Organic materials such as straw are sometimes used as mulch in agricultural systems to cover the soil surface. Depending on the material and conditions, mulch can help reduce direct exposure of the soil to sunlight and slow moisture loss.

However, the effects of any particular soil-covering method depend on how it is used and on local conditions. We will continue observing the development of our potatoes as the growing cycle progresses.

Potatoes and the Mediterranean growing season

Potatoes provide an interesting example of how agricultural practices adapt to regional climates.

In Cyprus, the long, hot and dry summer creates different challenges from those found in cooler European regions. Planting schedules therefore need to take local seasonal conditions into account.

Autumn cultivation allows potatoes to develop during a different part of the year from spring crops. Temperature, rainfall, irrigation needs and the length of the growing period all influence how a crop progresses.

These seasonal differences are important when documenting agricultural activities. A planting date alone does not determine how quickly plants will develop or when they will be ready for harvest.

At Mavronero, following the potatoes from the first days after planting will allow us to record the stages of their development and build a clearer picture of this particular growing cycle.

Observing and documenting the growing process at Mavronero

The first sprouts are only the beginning, but they offer a useful starting point for documenting the crop’s progress.

By observing the plants over time, we can follow changes such as the development of new leaves, the growth of stems and the overall appearance of the plants. These observations help create a record of the growing cycle, from the initial planting to the later stages of development.

They also remind us that agricultural work is a gradual process. Much of what determines a harvest happens over weeks and months, with many important changes taking place below the soil surface.

For now, our confirmed observations are simple: 24 potato seed pieces were planted on 22 September, and the first sprouts appeared approximately two weeks later.

As the plants continue to grow, further observations will help us document what happens next.

What comes next for our potatoes?

With the first shoots now visible, the next stage is to follow the plants as they establish themselves and develop more foliage.

Over the coming weeks, we will be able to observe whether new shoots continue to emerge, how the leaves develop and how the crop progresses through its growing cycle.

It is still too early to draw conclusions about the eventual harvest. The first sprouts are an encouraging beginning, but the success of the crop will depend on its development over time and the conditions it encounters along the way.

We look forward to following this process on the River Terrace and sharing further updates as the potatoes grow.

Conclusion: Small beginnings, another growing cycle

Our September potato planting at Mavronero Farm began with 24 potato seed pieces placed in the soil on 22 September. Approximately two weeks later, the first green sprouts appeared.

These early signs of growth mark the transition from planting to the visible development of the crop. They also offer an opportunity to observe the different stages of potato cultivation in Cyprus, where autumn planting forms an important part of the agricultural calendar.

For now, the focus is on watching the young plants develop and documenting their progress. Each new stage will tell us a little more about this growing cycle on the River Terrace.

From the first buds to the first green leaves, the process has begun. 🌱

Sources

Government of Cyprus – Potato Production and Cultivation Seasons

Cyprus Agricultural Research Institute – Potato Production in Cyprus

University of Maine Cooperative Extension – Growing Potatoes in the Home Garden

University of Florida IFAS Extension – Growing Potatoes in the Florida Home Garden

A new potato-growing cycle begins At Mavronero Farm, growing food involves more than planting seeds and waiting for a harvest.
