Green tree frogs have been appearing around the raised beds and the nursery beneath the tree, where their bright green colour makes them stand out against the surrounding vegetation.

These small amphibians have become a favourite sight at the farm. Whenever we pass the raised beds, it is tempting to stop for a few minutes to watch them and record their presence.

The photographs capture one of these quiet encounters: a green tree frog resting on a plant surface, surrounded by the greenery of the growing area.

Although they are small and often easy to overlook, these frogs remind us that the spaces we cultivate are also used by wildlife.

Getting to know the Middle East tree frog

Cyprus is home to the Middle East tree frog (Hyla savignyi), a small amphibian recognised by its smooth green skin, pale underside and dark stripe running from the snout through the eye towards the side of the body.

Adults generally measure only a few centimetres long. Their specialised toe pads help them grip vegetation, allowing them to climb and rest on leaves, stems and branches.

Despite their association with water during breeding, tree frogs can spend much of their lives among vegetation away from permanent ponds. In Cyprus, they occur in a variety of landscapes, including gardens, agricultural areas, shrubs and places with suitable vegetation and moisture.

For a closer look at the species, read our related article, Middle East tree frog (Hyla savignyi): a tiny amphibian of Mediterranean landscapes.

Why might they be visiting the raised beds and nursery?

We suspect that the combination of moisture from the sprinklers, vegetation and a sunny location makes the raised beds and nursery attractive to these frogs.

This is our observation rather than a confirmed explanation of their behaviour. The availability of suitable shelter, humidity and food may all influence where amphibians are found, but further observation would be needed to understand exactly why these particular areas are being used.

The nursery beneath the tree and the raised beds offer different growing conditions within the farm. Watching the frogs in these spaces gives us an opportunity to notice how wildlife moves through and uses the areas around our crops.

A small amphibian with an ecological role

Tree frogs are insectivorous amphibians. They feed on small invertebrates, including insects and other suitable prey, and form part of the food web in the ecosystems where they live.

Their presence is one part of the wider ecological relationships found in agricultural landscapes. Farms are not only places where food is produced; they can also provide habitat and resources for different forms of wildlife.

However, observing a frog at the farm does not, by itself, establish the overall health of an ecosystem. Understanding biodiversity requires looking at the wider range of species present, their habitats and how these change over time.

Taking time to observe the wildlife around us

One of the enjoyable things about working at Mavronero is discovering wildlife during everyday activities. Sometimes, passing the raised beds turns into a few minutes spent watching a frog resting among the plants.

These small encounters encourage us to look more closely at our surroundings and appreciate the living systems that share the farm with us.

By photographing and recording observations, we can build a record of the wildlife we encounter and develop a better understanding of how different parts of the farm are used.

Conclusions

The green tree frogs visiting Mavronero’s raised beds and nursery have become welcome little neighbours. Their presence gives us a reason to pause, observe and appreciate the wildlife that shares our growing spaces.

We suspect that moisture from the sprinklers, vegetation and the sunny location contribute to the appeal of these areas, although this has not been confirmed. Continued observation may help us understand more about their use of the farm.

Sometimes, a few quiet minutes spent watching a small amphibian can remind us that a farm is much more than the crops growing in its beds. It is also a landscape shared with other living things.

Related articles

Middle East tree frog (Hyla savignyi): a tiny amphibian of Mediterranean landscapes — Learn more about the species, its characteristics, habitat and ecological role.

Sources

HerpAtlas.cy — Tree frog (Hyla savignyi) — Species description, habitat, distribution in Cyprus and conservation protection.

Cyprus Department of Forests — Fauna — Information on amphibians found in Cyprus.

Small visitors in our growing spaces We have some lovely little visitors at Mavronero!
