After documenting the appearance of the first pods in September, the plants are now producing mature pods ready to be harvested.

Known locally in Cyprus as louvi, black-eyed beans (Vigna unguiculata) are a familiar legume in Cypriot food traditions. Their harvest offers another opportunity to follow the connection between seasonal cultivation and the food prepared at the farmhouse.

In our previous article, Black-eyed beans begin producing their first pods, we documented the early stages of pod development. Now, we follow the next step: harvesting and preparing the beans.

From developing pods to harvest

Since the first pods appeared, the plants have continued to grow and produce long, green pods among their foliage. Their development marks the transition from active crop growth to harvesting.

The pods are collected directly from the plants, bringing the growing cycle one step closer to the kitchen. Each harvest offers a closer look at the seasonal rhythm of the garden and the work involved in producing our own food.

From pods to beans

Once harvested, the pods are opened to reveal the individual beans inside.

The freshly shelled beans show a range of pale green and cream colours, with their characteristic dark markings around the seed opening beginning to become visible.

This simple process connects the work in the garden with the preparation of food in the kitchen. What begins as a climbing plant in the field becomes an ingredient ready to be cooked and enjoyed.

Louvi in Cypriot food traditions

Louvi holds a familiar place in traditional Cypriot cuisine. It is commonly prepared as a seasonal dish, often served boiled and accompanied by fresh vegetables and olive oil.

At Mavronero, harvesting our own black-eyed beans brings this connection between cultivation and local food traditions directly into the farmhouse.

Growing and preparing seasonal produce allows us to appreciate not only the final meal, but also the time and work involved in bringing it from the field to the plate.

This is part of a wider pattern of seasonal cultivation at Mavronero. As explored in our article Peas at Mavronero: from autumn sowing to spring harvest, growing legumes connects food production with the natural cycles of the farm.

Following the growing cycle at Mavronero

Every harvest is part of a wider seasonal process. From the first stages of plant development to flowering, pod formation and collection, documenting these changes helps us follow how crops develop under Mediterranean conditions.

Different crops progress through their growing cycles at different times of the year. Our article on Seasonal crop development at Mavronero offers a wider look at these changing stages across the farm.

The black-eyed bean harvest is another chapter in this ongoing process, connecting observations in the garden with the food produced at Mavronero.

From the field to the plate

The freshly harvested louvi is a reminder of the value of seasonal food and the close relationship between farming, local traditions and everyday life.

From the first pods appearing on the plants to the beans ready for the kitchen, this harvest celebrates another moment in the growing season at Mavronero Farm.

Following the journey of a traditional Cypriot legume from the garden to the kitchen.
