Even the simplest wild plants can become valuable natural skincare ingredients when prepared with patience and care.
At Mavronero Farm, we create small batches of herbal creams using flowers that grow naturally around our Mediterranean farm. Rather than relying on synthetic ingredients, we combine traditional herbal knowledge with our own organic extra virgin olive oil to produce simple, nourishing products.
Every jar begins long before the cream itself is made.
The first step: creating herbal infused oils
The foundation of every herbal cream is an infused oil.
Freshly harvested flowers are carefully placed into our organic extra virgin olive oil and left to infuse naturally for around five weeks in a sunny location at the farmhouse.
This slow process allows the oil to absorb many of the plants’ naturally occurring compounds while preserving the gentle qualities of the olive oil.
Once the infusion is complete, the flowers are filtered out, leaving behind a richly coloured botanical oil ready for use.
At Mavronero we currently prepare:
- wild calendula flower infused olive oil
- aloe vera flower infused olive oil
Each infused oil carries the unique characteristics of the plant from which it was made.
Wild calendula: one of nature’s skin allies
Wild calendula has been valued in Mediterranean herbal traditions for centuries.
Its flowers have traditionally been used to help soothe dry or irritated skin and are appreciated for their naturally occurring antioxidant and skin-conditioning compounds.
Our wild calendula grows naturally around the farm before being carefully harvested by hand during the flowering season.
By slowly infusing the flowers into olive oil, we create the base for our calendula creams.
Aloe vera flowers: an often overlooked ingredient
While aloe vera gel is widely recognised, its flowers receive far less attention.
The yellow flower spikes are also rich in botanical compounds and can be infused into oil using the same slow traditional process.
The resulting infused oil offers another gentle botanical ingredient for handmade skincare preparations.
Turning infused oils into herbal creams
Once the infused oils are ready, they are transformed into creams using a small number of carefully selected ingredients.
These include:
- botanical infused olive oil
- natural beeswax
- organic shea butter (used in selected recipes)
- organic lavender essential oil
The beeswax provides structure, the shea butter adds richness and softness, while lavender essential oil contributes a pleasant natural fragrance.
Everything is prepared in small batches using clean, sterilised glass jars.
The creams we produced
This season we prepared several different herbal creams, including:
- Wild calendula cream
- Wild calendula with shea butter cream
- Aloe vera flower cream
Each recipe has a slightly different texture while maintaining the same philosophy of using simple natural ingredients.
Why use olive oil as the base?
Olive oil has been used in Mediterranean skincare for thousands of years.
In addition to acting as an excellent carrier for herbal infusions, it naturally contains compounds such as vitamin E and polyphenols that help protect and nourish the skin.
Using our own organic olive oil allows every stage of the process—from harvesting the flowers to filling the jars—to remain connected to the landscape where the ingredients were grown.
A slow process inspired by nature
Unlike industrial cosmetic production, herbal infusions cannot be rushed.
The flowers spend weeks releasing their botanical compounds into the oil before the creams are carefully prepared by hand.
This slower approach reflects one of the principles behind regenerative farming: working with natural processes rather than trying to accelerate them.
Every jar represents the connection between biodiversity, traditional knowledge and sustainable agriculture.

Many of the ingredients used in these creams come directly from plants growing naturally around Mavronero Farm.
By protecting native flora and managing the landscape regeneratively, we create habitats where useful medicinal plants continue to thrive alongside pollinators, wildlife and olive trees.
For us, these herbal creams are more than skincare products—they are another way of celebrating the remarkable biodiversity of the Mediterranean landscape.
