During the spring of 2026, we documented the flowering of white rockrose (Cistus salviifolius) at Mavronero Farm. These native shrubs covered parts of the landscape with delicate white flowers, creating a brief but important seasonal display that supports pollinators and reflects the natural health of Mediterranean ecosystems.
Although each flower blooms for only a short period, the plant itself is exceptionally resilient. Perfectly adapted to dry summers, poor soils and rocky terrain, white rockrose is one of the Mediterranean’s most characteristic native shrubs and an excellent example of nature’s ability to thrive under challenging conditions.
A native Mediterranean shrub
White rockrose (Cistus salviifolius) belongs to the Cistaceae family, commonly known as the rockrose family.
It is native to the Mediterranean Basin and naturally occurs across southern Europe, North Africa and parts of western Asia. The shrub typically grows between 30 and 100 centimetres tall, forming dense, rounded bushes that become an important part of Mediterranean shrublands.
Its distinctive white flowers, each with five delicate petals surrounding a bright yellow centre, appear mainly from late winter through spring, depending on local rainfall and temperatures.
